Pediatric Services

Sonja Brownlee, M.D., is a general pediatrician. Pediatrics is the specialty of medicine concerned with children from birth through 16 years of age. Dr. Brownlee sees patients in her office for well child exams and sick visits by appointment.

Telephone Calls

The office is open for phone calls from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. All phone calls will be returned the same day, except on Fridays.

The receptionist will notify the nurse quickly concerning sick patient calls. Phone calls concerning non-urgent medical care, routine lab results, refills, etc., may be set aside to wait for another time later that same day.

Over the phone, we can help you decide if your child needs to be seen. We can also recommend simple home treatments and nonprescription medications. Most illnesses requiring prescription medications or more complicated home remedies, are impossible to diagnose or treat over the phone and require an office visit.

Nights, Weekends, Holidays

When our office is closed, an answering machine will take routine messages. If your child is ill, please consult our website www.elkokidsdoc.com which gives general medical advise for caring for your child and to help you decide if and when your child should be seen. If your child needs to be seen after office hours, please contact the emergency department at Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital at 738-5151.

Authorization to Treat

If a parent or legal guardian cannot accompany a child for an office visit, please provide a written authorization from a parent or legal guardian that identifies the adult bringing the child and authorizes that adult to seek all necessary medical care from Dr. Brownlee. Also, please supply written information regarding the reason for the appointment (symptoms, duration, severity, etc.).

Medical Records

We request that copies of all medical records from other physicians, hospitals, laboratories, and x-ray, including up to date immunization records, be in our files before your child will be established as a patient. However, we will schedule appointments for an acute illness while waiting to receive records.

If you move to another location or change pediatricians, we will be happy to send a copy of our office records to the physician of your choice. We must have a written request from you authorizing us to transfer records, as well as to provide insurance companies with this information.

Confidentiality

Your child's medical record is strictly private. No information regarding your child's condition will be given out to your child's school, friends, or relatives without your permission. The only exception to this is when required by law.

Teenage patients should feel comfortable to discuss any questions or problems with full assurance of confidentiality. Dr. Brownlee is their doctor, not their parent's. If a teenager reveals a life-threatening or serious problem which parents should know about, parents will be informed only after discussing the need to do so with the teenager.
